FirstGen Ahead’s pilot launch in 2019 followed a national study of the impact of coaching on early career outcomes for Pell recipients (low-income students) and over a decade of experience working with first-generation college students.
Two findings were clear from all the research and experience: coaching and summer internships make a significant difference in landing a “good” first position following college. A good first position requires a college degree, has competitive salary and benefits, and has opportunities for professional development.
With a lack of individualized, affordable, career coaching support for first-generation college students, FirstGen Ahead piloted a supportive model of one-on-one coaching and small group project learning. We worked in partnership with The Steppingstone Foundation in recruiting first-generation college juniors to participate in the pilots during academic years 2019/2020 and 2020/2021.
FirstGen Ahead is expanding its services beginning academic year 2021/2022 through partnerships with interested organizations to help meet this critical challenge.
